Setting Comparison In a dystopian society those in power will manipulate the setting to ensure a controlled atmosphere over its citizens. However, this falsified setting is either displayed as dirty and indigent or as a pristine and neat society with no inbetween characteristics. 1984 by George Orwell is recognized as a dystopian novel that takes place in a futuristic country called Oceania. This society is at non-stop war and experiences spontaneous bombings along with poor living conditions. The novel begins as Winston Smith scribbles down in his journal, â€Å"DOWN WITH BIG BROTHER†. Due to the â€Å"rules† in this society no acts against the party will be tolerated, resulting in consequences for Winston if anyone were to discover his journal†¦show more content†¦As Jonas continues his difficult journey he encounters a friendly home with a family celebrating Christmas and Jonas now believes he has saved his society (224-225). These works of literature do not have similar settings, but they both can be addressed as dystopian novels. In 1984 the setting is dirty and unsafe. The party has erased all past memories and uses newspeak and doublespeak. In Oceania the residents must be careful of random bombs going off. Oceania has many poor citizens that are brainwashed to become a devoted party follower. In The Giver the setting is perfectly aligned. There is no disease or sickness to wipe out people. War is non-existent as well as any strong emotion. The society follows strict orders and routines at every age. This neat and pristine community is the very opposite of 1984. Although these novels carry a different setting they both still hold the requirements to be recognized as a dystopian form of literature. In both these novels there is a harsh punishment if you are caught with not following the orders. In 1984, you will become vaporized, or wiped from existence. This is looked down upon and feared by all of t he people in Oceania. While in The Giver you become released, which they call it beginning a new life somewhere better. They treat this as a honor but, in reality you are being injected with a lethal substance that kills you. Explore Steinbeck’s portrayal of Curley’s wife in Of Mice and Men Of mice and men was set in America during the 1930’s when the whole country was going through the great depression so no one had much money and it became hard for men to find jobs and keep them. This is why it is strange at the start of the novel when we are introduced to George and Lennie traveling together to find work. It was hard for men to find jobs alone and even harder for two men to find jobs together. During the great depression, women had no freedom and they couldn’t get jobs like the men tried to because the men had more power over them and controlled them. Her finger nails were red. Her hair hung in little rolled clusters, like sausages.’ Steinbeck points out that she is wearing a lot of red which includes her make-up and clothes. The colour red connotes danger and love but also shows that Curley’s wife wants a sexual relationship with one of the men. She was fully dressed in red too. ‘She wore a cotton house dress and red mules, on the insteps of which were little bouquets of red ostrich feather.’ The way that she dresses tells the reader that she wants to look good in front of the men and even though she’s not dressed appropriately for on the ranch, she still chooses to dress like that and wants to show the men how good she looks. Throughout the novel, Curley’s wife is never called by an individual name, he is known to all the men on the ranch as ‘Curley’s wife’. She doesn’t have a name like all the other men do, which again shows that she is treated with no respect and referred to as an object. Steinbeck has portrayed Curley’s wife like this so the readers can put their own view across on how they think she is and what they think she is like and how she behaves and the way she comes across as being ‘a tart’ gives the readers a negative impression of her.
